Care Information

  • Site

Bright indirect light to bright shade. It needs good light especially over winter so North facing rooms are not really suitable.

  • Temperature

Average warmth. It does not like getting cold. Not too keen on being right next to a radiator.

  • Water

Quite regularly in the growing season but leave to dry out slightly first. Rarely over the winter months this is when you really need to let it dry out a bit. Benefits from occasional misting.

  • Feeding

A liquid feed every month or so. A weak soloution (1/4 of the strength) can be given over winter every six weeks.

  • Tip

Leaf drop can be due to dry air or overwatering. Normally too much water over winter.

Ficus lyrata -

Fiddle leaf fig

Large strangely shaped glossy leaves (hence the name!) grow in a whorl up the long straight stem of this shapely fig. Branches will grow from the leaf bases in time creating a wonderfully exotic specimen. Unbelievably fashionable its 'the' plant of the decade, so far!

We often get asked what is the difference between the different styles.

The main difference with all looks of the Fiddle leaf figs is time. The specimens with leaves all the way up are young trees potted up together whereas the specimens with a trunk and branches are much older specimens that have been pruned over years to give them the small tree shape.

They could all become tree shaped but this takes careful pruning and in a normal home environment years of growth.
