Also known as the Butterfly Palm for its wide elegant spread, it's a terrific choice if you're looking for a big bushy palm for a bright spot with value in mind. Chrysiladocarpus lutescensneeds a little more care than the easier palms, such as kentia or parlour palm but your reward for meeting its needs is a truly magnificent specimen.
For this reason, it goes excellently in a self-watering system where its watering needs will be met exactly. If it is in a bright spot, without direct midday sun, there is an extremely high chance that this lush palm will thrive for many years.
Perfect for screening. The density and spread of this plant means its ideal for covering up unsightly patches of walls or ugly window views.
Unlike many other palms, this particular species will not grow into one single trunk with the ordinary palm crown of leaves. Rather, it grows multiple stems and more closely resembles bamboo in its maturity than a typical 'paradise beach' type palm.
Temperature Best kept warm. Will suffer in temperatures below 15 celsius.
WateringIt’s fairly drought resistant, but will benefit from being kept slightly moist. During winter, let it dry out completely before watering. Mist the leaves every now and then for maximum plant health.
Feeding Use palm food during the growing season or if you see browning across the entire plant (not just brown tips on a few leaves, which indicates a watering issue.)
Tips If any stems begin to die remove them ASAP to stop any rot infecting the healthy stems adjacent.
Light Level A nice bright spot out off too much direct sun will bring out all the vibrancy and growth this plant has to offer.
