An instantly recognizable fig, popular in homes and offices for decades. Remarkably easy to look after, with an unusually dark complexion that contrasts beautifully against white walls.
When potted into the self-watering system, Ficus elastica 'Abidjan' will grow quickly and reward you with many new leaves each year. New leaves show up as a bold crimson colour. Across Asia, these plants grow into trees over 100ft tall, and were traditionally harvested in the production of rubber.
When pruning back, you will notice the white rubbery sap. Be careful, as it is an irritant and highly toxic. Do not prune back too much at once, or it will lose too much liquid and you will see the rest of the plant wilt as a result.
Being so black, the leaves have a tendency to show up dust very clearly. Wipe them down with a damp cloth to improve the plant's health and make it look a bit nicer as well.
We have some very large specimens available here at our nursery, with one over 3 metres tall. Please get in touch if you are interested in these.
